When Jim Zemlin, Executive Director of the Linux Foundation, in his keynote speech at the Open Source Summit1 said that “2017 is the year of the Linux desktop” it did not really bring cheer on faces. We all know Linux is lagging far behind in desktop computing. In fact, it didn’t take long before he was trolled on social networks for using a MacBook for his presentation while proclaiming2 2017 as the year of the Linux desktop.

Linux and supercomputers

In June 2017 I wrote a blog post3 about Linux being close to reaching 100% domination of all 500 top supercomputers of the world. At that time Linux powered 498 supercomputers while the remaining two were running Unix.

Published on the 13th of November 2017 the TOP500 list4 shows that Linux now dominates all in supercomputing. ZDNET covered the story5 reminding us of Linux appearing in the TOP500 list for the first time in 1998 and how it climbed the ladder ever since.
