In the morning of Friday 1 December 2017 I saw a few people writing about a fake biometric ID card case on Facebook. It all started after it was reported1 on the radio.

It’s reported that fraudsters attempted to retrieve money from the State Bank of Mauritius and the Mauritius Commercial Bank using fake biometric identity cards. Thanks to the bank officials who promptly alerted police the people involved in the scam network were apprehended.

More reports234 appeared in the media, although it is said that the matter is being investigated with the utmost secrecy by the authorities. As per a source that disclosed to L’express5 newspaper the seized ID cards look identical to those issued by the Mauritius National Identity Card (MNIC) unit.

The “No to biometric data on ID card” group and the “Confédération des Travailleurs du Secteur Privé (CTSP)” met on Saturday 2 December 2017 to discuss the matter of fake biometric ID cards. They’re hoping that politicians raise concerns over this matter as days close by for the constituency 18 by-election.
